Sunday morning my wife and I went to Walmart for a few things to get ready for our Father’s Day cookout with the kids and grandkids. As we were at the register getting ready to pay I felt this overwhelming need to ask the checkout lady if there was anything I could pray for her about.
“Karen, how are you doing this morning? Doing pretty good, was her response, thank you for asking. Absolutely. Karen, may I ask you a question? Sure. Now, this may sound a bit weird but is there anything I can pray for you about today?” You could tell she was caught off guard by the surprised look she gave me but almost simultaneously her eyes began to fill with tears and sadness came across her face.
She thought for a moment and said, yes there is. You can pray for my son Mike. He is going through a divorce and his X wife is in California with their four kids. It’s just terrible. I hate it for him and his kids.” With permission, I stepped around and put my hand on her shoulder and said I’ll pray for him all throughout the day. Thank you for trusting me with this prayer, you are a great mom.”
She was no longer surprised but thankful. Something happened in that span of 60 seconds that put us on common ground. She told me no one has ever asked her if there was something they could pray for her about, at least not at Walmart and certainly not in the checkout line. We laughed and Gwen and I walked away. I’ll see Karen again when I go to Walmart and I’ll inquire about Mike and hopefully have another opportunity to pour courage into Karen.
Now I don’t tell you this story to brag on me or my efforts. I was simply seeking to be obedient to the Holy Spirits leading. From time to time He has me ask this question to everyone from the Walmart associate to a waitress to the Uber driver. Stepping out and asking someone if you could pray for them is another way to sow seeds of the gospel. I never know what kind of soil the seeds will fall on or the response I’ll get but I must step out in faith and ask. My role is to be obedient to His leading and I try to stay preoccupied with the gospel by seeking to reflect Christ authentically and reproduce Him with intentionality as I go. In fact, as His Ambassadors/Representatives that is our job.
While we still have breath we are to glorify God by loving Him and others (Matthew 22:37-40) and doing what He has commanded us to do which is to help others be at peace with Him. (2 Corinthians 5:17-21)
So if you are a follower of Christ my encouragement to you is to step out in faith. Push through the fear and look for ways to sow seeds of the gospel into the lives of those you come into contact with. You can do that in many ways but when you use your words it is powerful and you will hear yourself say things that you know are directly from the Holy Spirit. He desires to use you…He has rigged it this way.
Remember we are not ashamed of the testimony of our Lord. We are more than conquers in Christ Jesus and Greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world. Now let’s all go and make disciples… (Matthew 28:19-20)
